Perfect Edges for Complex Subjects

Standard Clipping Paths create hard, unnatural edges on "fuzzy" subjects like models with flying hair, furry pets, or wool clothing. This destroys the realism of the photo.

Our Image Masking Service uses advanced Photoshop techniques (Alpha Channel, Layer Masking, Color Range) to separate the subject from the background while preserving:

  • Individual strands of hair and fur
  • Transparency in glass, water, or smoke
  • Soft edges and motion blur
  • Natural transitions for a realistic look

Common Questions & Pricing

Expert masking requires time and skill. Here is how we charge.

The Technique

Image Masking is a non-destructive way to hide or reveal parts of an image. Unlike a clipping path which cuts, a mask controls the opacity of a layer.

When to use it?

We use masking when the subject has:

  • Fuzzy Edges: Hair, fur, feathers, wool.
  • Transparency: Glass, water, clear plastic, smoke.
  • Translucency: Bridal veils, mesh fabrics, muslin cloth.

Masking pricing is categorized by the difficulty of the edge and background contrast.

1. Basic Masking

From $0.89 / image

Description: Objects with slightly fuzzy edges on a simple, contrasting background.

Examples: Simple fur toys, wool sweaters, basic hair on plain background.

2. Medium Masking (Hair)

From $1.49 / image

Description: Models with flying hair or wind-blown hair on a relatively clean background.

3. Complex Masking (Fur)

From $2.99 / image

Description: Animals with detailed fur or subjects on complex/multicolored backgrounds where separation is difficult.

4. Transparency Masking

From $3.99 / image

Description: Transparent objects like glass bottles, water splashes, or net fabrics requiring opacity preservation.

Clipping Path uses the Pen Tool to create a vector line. It results in a hard, crisp edge. It is best for solid objects like shoes, cars, or boxes.

Image Masking uses tools like the Background Eraser, Color Range, or Refine Edge. It creates a soft, feathered edge. It is mandatory for hair, fur, smoke, and transparent items.

Since masking involves transparency and layers, the best formats are:

  • PSD / TIFF: Layers are preserved, so you can change the background later.
  • PNG: Supports transparent backgrounds for web use.
  • JPG: Only if you want the subject placed on a specific solid color (e.g., white).

Masking is more time-consuming than standard clipping paths because it requires meticulous attention to detail to preserve individual strands of hair. However, our standard turnaround is still 24 hours. For large volumes of complex masking, we may require 48 hours.
